The First 48 hours at Our Chennai Centre - What Actually Happens

No two admissions are identical, but the sequence below reflects what most families experience when they first arrive at our Chennai centre. Most patients arrive between 10am and 6pm, usually with a family member. Here is how it typically unfolds:

Day 1, first 2 hours:

The admission coordinator and a nurse take basic vitals. The on-call psychiatrist does a brief assessment and not a full diagnosis yet, but enough to decide if medical detox needs to start immediately. Families are asked to stay during this time and a simple consent form is signed.

Day 1, evening:

The patient is assigned a room (standard sharing or single, depending on availability and clinical need). Dinner is served in the common dining area. The nursing team does a second round of observations. For alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, medication is given by 9pm. The psychiatrist reviews the plan before leaving for the day.

Day 2, morning:

A full physical and psychiatric assessment is completed by 11am. Blood work (if needed) is sent to a local lab. The patient meets their primary counsellor for the first time. There is a 30-minute conversation, not therapy yet. Family members receive a verbal update and a written summary.

Day 2, afternoon and evening:

The patient joins their first group session (orientation and psychoeducation). Medication is adjusted if withdrawal symptoms appear. By the end of day 2, a personalized treatment plan is shared with the family including estimated duration, therapy schedule, and family visit days.

Aftercare & Follow-up in Chennai

Discharge is not the end of our work together. Every patient leaving our Chennai centre receives a detailed relapse prevention plan and we stay actively involved afterwards.

Our team makes follow-up calls at 30, 60, and 90-days post-discharge to check on medication compliance, identify early warning signs, and adjust the plan if needed. Families can reach the same clinical team during this period.

Outpatient support in Chennai:

Patients stepping down from residential care can continue individual therapy and psychiatrist consultations at our rehabs in Chennai. We also coordinate with external counsellors if the family prefers a location closer to home.

These free, peer-led groups provide ongoing fellowship and many of our discharged patients also attend these weekly meetings.

What to Bring If Admission Happens the Same Day

• Identity proof (Aadhaar, voter ID, or passport) for the patient
• Medical records from previous treatments (if any)
• List of current medications with dosages
• Two sets of comfortable clothes, toiletries, slippers
• A mobile phone (kept with staff during detox phase, returned for scheduled calls)
• Do not bring any substances, sharp objects, or outside food.

Insurance and payment

We accept cash, bank transfer, and all major debit/credit cards. If you have health insurance that covers mental health or de-addiction (as mandated under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017), we will provide all documentation for reimbursement.
